Your kitchen faucet is one of the most used fixtures in your home. From washing dishes to rinsing vegetables, it's a workhorse that often gets overlooked—until it starts leaking, wobbling, or simply looking outdated. Replacing a kitchen faucet might seem like a job reserved for a professional plumber, but with the right tools and a bit of guidance, it's a project you can tackle yourself in an afternoon.

This guide will walk you through every step of replacing your old kitchen faucet with a new one, including models with a sprayer. We'll cover everything from preparing your workspace to ensuring your new installation is leak-free. By following these instructions, you can give your kitchen a functional and aesthetic upgrade without the cost of a professional.

Why Replace Your Kitchen Faucet?

Before we get into the "how," let's talk about the "why." There are several common reasons homeowners decide it's time for a faucet upgrade:

· Persistent Leaks: A constant drip isn't just annoying; it can also drive up your water bill and cause water damage under your sink. While some leaks can be fixed by replacing a washer, a worn-out faucet may require a full replacement.

· Corrosion and Mineral Buildup: Hard water can lead to calcium and rust buildup, which can affect water flow and make your faucet look unsightly. Over time, corrosion can permanently damage the fixture.

· Outdated Style: An old faucet can date your entire kitchen. Upgrading to a modern design, like a sleek kitchen faucet with sprayer, can instantly refresh the look of your sink area.

· Improved Functionality: Newer faucets offer features that older models lack, such as touchless operation, integrated water filters, and flexible spray heads. These can make daily kitchen tasks much more convenient.

Step-by-Step Guide to Changing Your Kitchen Faucet

Ready to get started? Follow these steps carefully for a successful installation.

Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply

This is the most critical first step. Look for two shut-off valves under your kitchen sink—one for hot water and one for cold. Turn them clockwise until they are fully closed. If you don't have valves under your sink, you'll need to turn off the main water supply to your house.

Once the valves are closed, turn on the old faucet to release any remaining pressure and drain any water left in the lines. Place a bucket underneath the sink to catch any drips from the supply lines.

Step 2: Disconnect the Water Supply Lines

Using an adjustable wrench, disconnect the hot and cold water supply lines from the shut-off valves. Be prepared for a small amount of water to spill out.

Next, you'll need to disconnect these lines from the faucet itself. This is where the basin wrench comes in handy. The nuts connecting the supply lines to the faucet can be hard to reach, but the long handle of a basin wrench is designed for this exact purpose.

Step 3: Remove the Old Kitchen Faucet

With the water lines disconnected, the only thing holding the old faucet in place is a set of mounting nuts on the underside of the sink. These can be metal or plastic. Use your basin wrench to loosen and remove them. If they are corroded and stuck, apply some penetrating oil and let it sit for about 15 minutes before trying again.

If you have a kitchen faucet with sprayer, you'll also need to disconnect the sprayer hose. This usually involves unscrewing it from the faucet body and removing a weight that helps retract it.

Once all the nuts and hoses are disconnected, you should be able to lift the old faucet straight out from the top of the sink.

Step 4: Clean the Sink Surface

After removing the old faucet, you'll likely find a buildup of grime, soap scum, and old plumber's putty. Use a putty knife to scrape away any residue and clean the area thoroughly with a household cleaner. A clean, dry surface is essential for creating a good seal with your new faucet.

Step 5: Install the New Faucet Gasket

Your new faucet will come with a rubber or plastic gasket (sometimes called a deck plate) that sits between the faucet base and the sink. This prevents water from leaking under the sink. Some faucets require a bead of plumber's putty or silicone instead of a gasket. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions included with your Yilin Hardware faucet to see what is recommended.

Position the gasket or apply the putty to the base of the new faucet before moving to the next step.

Step 6: Mount the New Kitchen Faucet

Feed the new faucet's water lines and threaded shanks through the hole(s) in the sink. If you're installing a kitchen faucet with sprayer, make sure to feed the sprayer hose through the central hole.

From underneath the sink, slide the provided washers and mounting nuts onto the faucet's threaded shanks. Hand-tighten them first to secure the faucet in place. Before you tighten them completely with the basin wrench, have someone look at the faucet from above to ensure it's straight and centered. Once it's properly aligned, tighten the nuts securely, but be careful not to overtighten, as this can damage the sink or the faucet.

Step 7: Connect the New Water Supply Lines

Connect the hot and cold water lines from the new faucet to the corresponding shut-off valves. Most modern faucets come with integrated supply lines that are long enough to reach the valves. If not, you may need to purchase new, flexible supply lines. Tighten the connections with an adjustable wrench, giving them a quarter-turn past hand-tight.

If you have a pull-down or pull-out sprayer, attach the weight to the sprayer hose under the sink. This weight allows the sprayer head to retract smoothly.

Step 8: Turn the Water On and Check for Leaks

This is the moment of truth. Slowly turn the water supply valves back on (counter-clockwise). Check all connection points—at the shut-off valves and at the base of the faucet—for any signs of dripping. Use your flashlight to get a good look.

If you see any leaks, turn the water off and tighten the connections slightly. Most leaks are caused by connections that aren't tight enough.

Once you're sure there are no leaks, turn the new faucet on. Let the water run for a few minutes to flush out any air or debris in the lines. Test both the hot and cold water, and if you have a sprayer, test its function as well.
